Events

The annual dinner of the 13th. of November was attended by 44 people, the best attendance for years. Despite structural alterations in the room made since our last visit, a good time was had by all. The Raffle at the dinner raised over £60 for club funds and caused bemusement to the Goat Gap local who won an ice-axe for herself. The venue has been booked for next year on November 11th. 2000. when it is hoped that better seating arrangements have been made.

The 50th. Anniversary Dinner will be held on March 25th. 2000. A guest speaker has been booked for the event and it promises to be even better than the last anniversary dinner. Booking forms have already been sent out. Accommodation is available at reduced rates for attendees. Book early! If anyone has addresses or knowledge of members or ex-members who may not receive information about this event, please contact Trevor Howarth or myself so we can invite them.

Clubman of the Year.

Alex Holden was presented with the trophy for the above at the Annual General Meeting. The award reflects the large amount of work Alex has done and continues to do with the operation of the Burnley caving Club Website. The site has already resulted in new members joining and has introduced the Club to a new world-wide audience.

Council of Northern Caving Clubs.

The Annual General Meeting C.N.C.C. is to be held at the Hellifield Village Institute at 10.30am on March 4th. 2000. The venue is to be arranged by Harvey Lomas, possibly the Yorkshire Ramblers Club Hut at Clapham.

Long Kin West Newby Moss.

The final chamber dig having reached 60 foot has been abandoned for the time being. The digging crew have suffered bad heads after many weeks work on the well engineered shaft due to the poor almost non-existent draught.

Merger Proposal?

The August / December edition of SPELEOscene (No. 39) contained details of a possible merger of the Northern Caving Association and the British Cave Research Association. After debate and discussions at the September Conference and other venues a Joint Working Party for British Caving has been set up. Further discussions are expected and press releases will be issued after each meeting. Comments and suggestions are invited to Bob Mehew and David Judson. Although events are still unfolding the situation deserves attention as the issues affect all Northern cavers.

Review

As is customary at this time of year, a brief review of Club activities is appropriate. Caving trips have continued regularly throughout the year. Various groups of cavers have tackled different levels of trips over the last twelve months. Novice trips have been organised via the Splash group during July and early August. Other novice trips have continued throughout the year. Permit trips have been made to the Leck Fell region, Easegill system, Birks Fell Cave, White Scar Cave, Mongo Gill and the Ingleborough Cave system. Club members have visited the usual "trade routes" and also explored other less well trodden underground venues. Digging has continued in the Kingsdale region and to a lesser extent in the Pendle area.

Bob Riley amongst others has opened new passage in Valley Entrance and gained publication in Descent magazine. Unfortunately trips outside Yorkshire have been undertaken in Derbyshire and France (OK it was only a small trip).

Our Librarian Simon got married to Heather this year. Congratulations to both! Several Club members attended and enjoyed themselves at the festivities. Simon has also completed his Rope Access Technician Course and gained employment as such.

Bernie Bond has continued to represent the Club at C.N.C.C. meetings and kept us informed of regional and national caving issues. Our thanks are due to him for all his efforts. Chris Holden has recovered from his operation and hopes to resume caving neat year.

The clubroom and Sparrow Hawk have been regularly attended throughout 1999 and various people have enjoyed the training facilities both on Thursday nights and at other times.

Work has begun on protecting the Library and archives from the damp atmosphere of the clubroom. Thanks are due to Pete Wilson for this, future work is planned for later on in the year to further improve the Library conditions.

The Annual Dinner was well attended as previously mentioned. Club members have also enjoyed other smaller informal social meetings and enjoyed walking and cycling trips.

Finally may I pass on my good wishes for the New Millennium and look forward to more in the forthcoming months.
