BCC Newsletter Summer 2002

Foreword.

With this Newsletter is your booking form for the 51st Annual dinner to be held at the Flying Horseshoe in Clapham. All are welcome and the usual excellent night out is expected at this new venue. So book early to avoid disappointment and return the form to the Secretary promptly.

AGM.

The Annual General Meeting will take place at the Club Hut on November 14. Members desiring to place other than routine business before the Annual General Meeting shall notify the Secretary in writing at the Committee meeting (the Pre-Annual General Meeting) held on the 31 October so that an agenda can be formulated.

Cave rescue.

BCC members were involved in two CRO callouts in recent months. The first on June 4 involved a party of five overdue in Tatham Wife Hole with the BCC group making their way off the fell as the first CRO group was being deployed.

The second more serious incident on 16 June involved the BCC Librarian falling in the lower main chamber of Marble Steps Pot sustaining suspected back/pelvic injuries. This involved a lengthy stretcher carry out and a long wait at Lancaster Infirmary.

Fortunately the injuries weren't as serious as first thought although they were painful enough according to Sean! Our Librarian is now back caving again with renewed enthusiasm for the use of cows-tails!

The incidents were reported in the Craven Herald and Descent and are reported in the Incidents 2002 section of the Cave Rescue Organisation web site.

Splash trips.

The annual caving trips with Burnley Council's programme for young people during the summer holidays previously known as SPLASH were this year called SHOUT for unfathomable reasons. Nevertheless groups of young people were accompanied underground by BCC members on three occasions in late July/early August despite the bad weather.

Afterword.

Despite the Editors new job occupying a large portion of his time a fuller newsletter should be available at the Annual Dinner. (Editors note: It wasn't ready!)

Stop Press.

As this newsletter was being compiled a BCC dig on Pendle Hill was causing a little ripple of excitement. More later!
