Today, the collieries of Oldham are confined to the history hooks. At one time, however, the industry was a major employer serving Oldham and much of the surrounding area. This book delves into the history of over one hundred and fifty pits from the 'Oldham Coalfield', an area that stretched from Royton in the north to Bardsley in the south and included the towns of Middleton and Chadderton to the west. As well as extensive research into the ownership and precise location of each site, there are also detailed newspaper accounts of numerous accidents and mining disasters, extracts from the Report on Child Labour in the Coal Mines (1841), and archive photographs and maps.
