Bobs Bond, Slit Pot Discovery, New Year 1972.
A photograph of Bob Greenwood's mobile death trap taken just before the discovery of Slit Pot, New Year 1972. The car had to rest on the way up to Penyghent Gill due to overheating. Getting back down the hill to Stainforth was pretty exciting as the car had three bald tyres and no brakes.
The intention that day was to dig a crawl at the bottom of Slab Pot but as the weather
conditions were so bad, we couldn't face getting changed. We started prodding around on the
surface near Slab Pot and Bob amused himself by using the crowbar as a javelin.
The bar penetrated the turf and a huge echo had us frantically digging. Bernie Bond joined us
the following day to complete the dig and we explored a sixty-foot entrance pitch and a few hundred
feet of fairly uninspiring cave.
